the best 2 forms of transport are walking and using a cycle. OK it might take you longer but at least you get there. you can even use a horse if long distance.

    Solar powered teleportation device.

Seriously, a self propelled sail plane or glider would have to win that one.

Sail boats, the energy is free.

Bicycles are very efficient but the human body is very inefficient.

The bicycle is a tremendously efficient means of transportation. In fact cycling is more efficient than any other method of travel–including walking! The one billion bicycles in the world are a testament to its effectiveness. The engine for this efficient mode of transport is the human body. Because bodies are fueled by food, diet plays an important role in how the body performs. Different muscle groups and types provide the power. Genetic inheritance, intensive training, and a competitive drive help top athletes push the boundaries of endurance and speed on the bicycle.

For moving large volumes of people, the train is the most efficient.

shank’s pony aka walking. and a push bike. all you need is the food you put into your body as a fuel source. i work way over in the other side of my home city, i get to work in half an hour by push bike. i beat the traffic going in and i get home even quicker relaxed.

Not easy to answer for there are always two amounts of energy that must be considered. (1) How much energy is used directly to power the vehicle and (2) how much energy was used in manufacturing the transport itself.

For example: it is often said that that the bicycle is energy free but nothing is for nothing. Energy is consumed by way of the food you eat to give you the energy to power the bike (as in 1) and (2) the energy used in the bike’s manufacture.

When considering the two form of energy used it is calculated that 95% of the energy a car uses in its lifetime is used in its manufacture…and so even if you purchase a car and leave in on the drive then the damage, if you will, is already done, the energy already used.

Indeed, it could be argued that to have a car and not drive it is a waist of the energy used in its manufacture.

Taking both forms of energy into account I would say a boat is probably the most efficient both from production energy cost and usage energy costs.

Just depends in what part of the world you live in.
    Desert~Camel
    Alps~Skies
    Pacific Islands~boat
    Jungle~Walking
and so on.But the best mode of transport is the electric buggy
that the disabled and able people use.It can be charged by various means.wind power, solar, water,or the mains electric.

Container ships – if measuring weight moved over distance to fossil fuel usage (tonnes/km/litre).

If we’re not talking fossil fuel, then evolution has worked out the most efficient way for us to travel and that’s to exter ourselves ie using our own metabolism to power the journey. The bicycle is amazingly efficient converting about 80% of your physical effort into kinetic energy, so I’d say in terms of speed and distance covered cycling is probably the best method of transport with us as the engine.

I’m fairly sure that I read somewhere that a full coach is the most energy efficient modern way of getting a group of people around the country.

If you hadn’t specified powered, I would have said cycling. Though wind powered does not consume any calories and if you include wind powered in your definition of powered, it would be a wind powered (or propelled, at any rate) ship. If you insist on powered by some sort of motor, it would still be a ship, the bigger the more efficient, if using up to date propulsion.

A sailing boat must come out high on the list. Last year I sailed from Falmouth to Northern France within twentyfour hours at a cost of under a fiver including food
