I don’t think you want to drive from Cairns to Adelaide.
I think you should drive from Cairns to Brisbane, enjoy the beaches there, and then fly from Brisbane to Adelaide.

drive yourself is the best way
ps
Adelaide is NOT on the east coast

That is going to take a very very long time to drive around the east coast like that. I did it from Melbourne to Rockhampton and took 3 months to get there then took a quick drive back through the middle. There is just sooo much to see. But mind you we did a little bit of work along the way. Even then I felt I didn’t get to see everything. But you need to map it out and work out how many hours a day you want to spend driving and how long you intend staying in one place. I was with my ex husband in a HQ Monaro and a 2 man tent. Had a ball, it was great. Doesn’t matter how you go round it’s more important to be organised if you’re on a time limit. Just plan it properly. Good luck.

Campervan if you can. It gives you a lot more options. You can go wherever the hell you want. If you drive into a place and don’t really like it, you can drive straight back out again. Buses are few and far between (and expensive), plus getting from a bus stop to accommodation can be a pain. If you have your accommodation and food with you it takes away a lot of the planning stress and gives you an insurmountable amount of freedom.

I did the west coast in a campervan – one of the best experiences of my life. The facilities in Oz for camping are soooo much better than in the UK, you’ll have no problems finding places to stay – I’d opt for the campervan again if I was lucky enough to be going back!

drive in your car, that way, you can go where you want, when you want.

Probably camper van, but they are real expensive. I always wonder how these kids do it. Just check the prices. I would suggest you fly to Perth and head up North fromt there. Unless you want to drive for days straight through some desert.
