Hire car for sure, 4 days isn’t along time for a country like the US and u don’t want to be spending it stuck on a bus or train imo

In my opinion as someone who visits DC very occasionally, I know just enough about DC to know that the DC Metro Subway is the best way to get around IMO.
Yeah sure you can get into a car and drive around DC, A. Good luck not getting lost because those streets can be very confusing if you are not a local. You can actually think that you are in nothwest DC and be on the outer edge of southeast very easily (areas of Washington are divided up into quadrants), that was my experience riding around DC with my father one year. B. Good luck finding an available parking spot anywhere. Parking garages fill up very quickly, and so do available open spots.
But the DC metro is what most tourists take to get around town, as well as locals going to and from work. It’s quick, inexpensive, and convenient to most places in town, and out into the suburbs in Maryland and Virginia.

Public transportation/Metro Rail, is the best way to go. Both parking & traffic can be difficult within DC and the surrounding area. The stations are located conveniently throughout the area and easily serve all the sites within the DC area.
Here is the link for Metro Rail http://www.wmata.com/rail/
One other thought/comment. If you have the opportunity to fly into Reagan Airport rather than Dulles, you will find it exceptionally easy to get into DC as it is located right on the Metro Rail Line. Dulles is further out and takes longer both to get in and out of the area.
Also on the length of the trip…4 days allows plenty of time to see DC.

I’ve lived here for 12 years and do not own a car. If you are visiting for just 4 days, you definitely do not need a car. Most of the standard attractions are withing walking distance. For other areas, you can take the Metro (subway) or bus. (The “Circulator” buses are specifically designed for visitors. And if once or twice you want to go somewhere that’s not convenient by public transit, you can always take a taxi. If you have a car, you will not only have to pay to rent it and for gas, but also either spend a lot of time looking for parking or pay a lot for parking.
This page is a good guide to getting around DC: http://www.frommers.com/destinations/washingtondc/0035020015.html

The traffic here is almost impossible during the day. I suggest public transportation. The subway is the perfect way to get around and with the city being relatively small compared to NY or LA, you won’t have to catch the train from place to place. A lot of popular destinations are within walking distance of one another. For example, the US Capitol is directly in front of the Smithsonian museums and as you pass them you end up at the Washington Monument which is directly in front of the WWII memorial which is directly in front of the Lincoln Memorial…etc.
If you rent a car then you will spend a great deal of time looking for parking. I understand that money is no issue but parking spaces are hard to come by. There are garages around but some fill up rather quickly with cars from people employed in the area during the day. Other garages aren’t necessarily close to the popular attractions that you are interested in which will require you to park further away than the average subway stop and then walk to your destination and walk back to the car.
It’s easier to take the subway.

Driving around D.C. when your not familiar with the city and the road system can be a bit tricky. When I first moved to D.C. it took me a long time to get acclimated (and now I live in Maryland)
DC is split into quadrants, with a Northwest, Southwest, Southeast, and Northeast. So it can be confusing–you’ll think your in the right area on the right road but in reality you’ll be on the right street but in the wrong quadrant of the city (and some areas are pretty rough–may not want to get lost there)
I would say public transport. Everything you’d want to do in DC in 4 days is available via public transport and it would save the hassle of renting and driving a car in an unfamiliar city, never mind dealing with rush hour traffic and finding a place to park (its not easy!)
The metro is the most popular mode of public transit, but there is also a bus system.
Like the other person said, if you can fly into Reagan you can take metro from there. Or you can fly into BWI and take a taxi or Super Shuttle or Amtrak to DC.
You can find hotels in DC or metro MD (Silver Spring, Rockville, etc) that are metro accessible. Just look for reputable ones (Best Western, etc).

I have lived in the Washington DC Metropolitan area now for 21 years. I hate to drive anywhere because the traffic is always slow…there is usually some sort of construction that slows the traffic down more…or the construction forces people to take a detour…whereby the detour signs start-out fine, then you don’t see them anymore and you drive for miles and miles in the wrong direction. Add to this the parades that sometimes shut down the streets of DC and you start to understand why the Metro subway system is the easiest way to get around the area.

Use public transportation. Parking is at a premium and very expensive. The Metro is easier to use and convenient to most tourist locations. Make sure you hotel is in easy walking distance of a metro station.

Are you an elitist or something?
Use the metro like everyone else.
